  • The Greater Cairo Master Transportation Plan was developed in the early 1970s' in order to provide a solution to the city's rapidly increasing traffic congestion and associated deteriorating air quality. The plan identified the need to construct a metro network of three lines.
  • The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) was established in 1933 as pan of the Ministry of Transport to prepare feasibility studies and construct Metro lines and Road Tunnels. The nat's followed the design/build concept: approach with a view to offering quick remedy needed to solve the acute transportation problem. This was done in co-operation with local and international renowned consultants and contractors'

  • In the last 17 years, since the stablish-ment of NAT, 63 Km of Metro lines. Line 1 and Line 2,have been built at the rate of 3,8 Km per year, plus the construction of the affiliated infrastr-ucture. The investment costs have already amounted to 11 Billion EG? for these Metro projects. This represents investment of 650 Million EGP per year in transport infrastructure for the first lime for any governmental sector in Egypt.
